It only requires one block, not two.
Its easy to make and definitely worth your time and effort.

You should have 8 pieces of 4.5 half-square triangles.
Trim them into 4.5 HST.
You need 108 HST in total.
Cut them into 2.5 segments.
Get two segments and flip one so that opposite colors are next to each other.
Now you have a four-patch.
Make 108 four-patch squares.
Step 4:
Assemble the 12 block as shown in the photo below.
You will need 36 pieces of 12 blocks.
Step 5:
take four pieces of the 12 blocks and rotate to make the 24 block.
Next, make 9 pieces of 24 blocks, then assemble them in 3 rows with 3 blocks each.
