All you oughta do is follow the diagram for the exact placements of the pieces to make the block.
Its one of my favorite patterns, especially if I need something for a last-minute gift.

Lay a 5 square and put a 2 1/2 square on each opposite corner.
Sew the squares diagonally from corner to corner.
Once done sewing, trim the excess fabric, an inch away from the block.
Make 16 of these blocks.
Sew them diagonally, trim the excess fabric away, and then press open.
Step 2
Now, assemble the block into a quadrant.
Sew them in fours, then sew those blocks together to complete one big block.
Repeat these steps three more times to make a quadrant and complete the quilt top.
